Cookie Policy
This page explains what cookies are, which ones this site uses and how to switch them off. It is written to be understood rather than to satisfy a lawyer.
What a cookie actually is
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to keep. It usually holds nothing more interesting than a random reference number. When you come back, the site can read that file and recognise the browser, which is how a site remembers a setting you chose or counts you as one returning visitor rather than two new ones.
Cookies cannot run programs, carry viruses, or read anything else on your computer. They also cannot see your name unless you have typed it in somewhere yourself.
The cookies this site uses
- Essential cookies. These make the site work: remembering your preferences, keeping pages loading properly, and basic security. Without them parts of the site would stop functioning, so they cannot be turned off from within the site.
- Analytics cookies. These tell us how many people visited, which pages they read, roughly where in the world they were and whether anything is broken. It is counting, not surveillance, and it is what tells us which guides are worth expanding.
- Affiliate tracking cookies. When you click through to a bookmaker, that operator may set a cookie so it knows the visit came from here. This is how the site earns its commission, and our affiliate disclosure explains the arrangement in full.
Cookies set by other companies
Some cookies are placed by third parties rather than by us, principally our analytics provider and the bookmakers you click through to. Those companies process that data under their own privacy policies, which we do not control. It is worth reading the bookmaker’s policy before you open an account with them, since you will be handing over far more information at that stage than any cookie carries.
Turning cookies off
You are in control, and you do not need our permission. Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies:
- Chrome. Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies.
- Safari. Settings, then Privacy, where you can block cookies and manage stored data.
- Firefox. Settings, then Privacy and Security, under Cookies and Site Data.
- Edge. Settings, then Cookies and site permissions.
Private or incognito browsing discards cookies when you close the window, which is a simple option if you would rather not manage them individually.
What happens if you block them
The site will still work and every page remains free to read. Analytics will simply not count your visit, which costs you nothing. If you block affiliate cookies and then sign up with a bookmaker, we will not be credited for that sign-up, which costs us rather than you.
Changes to this policy
If we add a service that sets new cookies, this page is updated to say so. It is worth a glance if you have not read it in a while, though we do not expect it to change often.
